Bigotry Redefined

May 18, 2009

First things first!  I think I’ve got to find a way to shorten my postings.  I find it so very difficult to give fair treatment to important issues in 150 words or less.  Maybe I should develop a sub-blog or ?  I’ll have to give it further consideration. If you have an ideas, do let me know.

Now, the meaty part!  There’s two phrases that I must share with you before I address this issue which, I confess,  is largely the result of a few truly nasty responses and though I’m typically not one to swing at pitches in the dirt,  it was the completly “sponge-headed” nature of the “comments” that illustrate yet another FEI (for those new to the blog, that a “Flat Earth Idolatry”) requiring special treatment. But again, first a momentary side-bar:

“A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still!”

And,

“A sane man must appear insane in an insane society lest he be perceived as being insane!”

I don’t know, for certain, the name of the Author for the first, it could have been Benjamin Franklin or Sir Walter Raleigh, the later, I’m certain, is Descartes.

We truly must learn to indulge opinion if for no other reason as a practice for concealing our own ignorance.  Consider it a “face saving device!”

My 4/16/09 entry, “Marriage Divide”, received many wonderful comments and though I’m not necessarily seeking anyone’s specific endorsement, I was, none the less, appreciative of the fact the most “got” the overriding point of the post.  As a reminder, I’m not looking for Xerox minds-melds!

What is keen to my observations, specifically of the more derisive in nature, was their acute level of detachment from fundamental and practical intellect.  I’m, agreeably, certainly not the brightest bulb in the pack but even I know what a Bigot is and what a Bigot is NOT!

For the record, a Bigot is:

“:a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.”  (Merriam-Webster)

Now, prone as contemporary culture is to re-invent and re-define nearly any and every thing, as yet, I’m not aware that we have redefined the word Bigot as well.  Further, I trust we will never breach the confines of reason to consider practitioners of any human practices, regardless of what they are/do, as a species, race or ethnic group.

This is what happens when there are no checks and balances in media, communications, politics etc. each of which with reckless practices prone to contort and morph to a design and intension all there own.

If, as Mr. Descartes suggest, one does not want to be berated as being insane it then also seems that one must adopt the practices of the insane world to void this risk!

Unfortunately, as yet, I’ve not been willing to call a toad a fig-newton!

None the less, returning to the point at hand:  in order for me to be (a bigot), in this instance and on this subject of SSM, then we (or I) will first have to squander reason and figure out how then one must orientate their thinking to void the accusation.

Ah yes, lets try this:  We can call whatever we want what we choose so long as we don’t have to recognize it for what it is!  I’ll try this on for a time and see if I can truly reach the level of insanity necessary to achieve retro-grade political appeal.

As an individual who loves to fly aircraft, a Pilot,  am I now a protected species and if you don’t like Pilots you are now a Bigot!   Oh God!!  We’re doomed!

Since we’re on the subject of redefining language, let’s take on just one other example:  Homophobic!

“Homo”:  “any of a genus (Homo) of hominids that includes modern humans (H. sapiens) and several extinct related species (as H. erectus and H. habilis)” (Merriam-Webster)

“Phobic”: “(Phobia) an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation.” (Merriam-Webster)

In its native form, homophobic, would, heretofore, applied to a clinical reference of an animals intuitive fear of humans. However now, in its nascent form,  being reformulated to identify a “special class of people” of which you are now to be afraid of or,  who might now be classified as victims.

Okay then, now I have one of my own: “aerohomophobic”: an irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against individuals who like or fly aircraft or spaceships (including extra-terrestrial).  How about,

“tsahomophobia: an irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against individuals who are subject to search at airports!

You must know, I’m having fun with this and could continue this on for quite some time. However,  I’ll respect your time and tolerance.

What is so, is often ignored!

And that’s all there is to say about that!
