Measles – Politicizing the Irrational!

Presidential Election Season (2016) is here and the media bashing aimed at shaping the public’s favor for any one candidate is in full swing; my advice is to ignore them.

Here’s the basics: Measles is a highly contagious virus; its migration is largely airborne in nature however an individual coming in direct contact with the saliva of an infected individual is equally susceptible. Nine out of ten, with no immunization, will become infected.

Now to the social protocols; as I’ve often said that “you may be free to act however, you may not be at liberty to do so” applies in the case of public health. I fully agree that a parent should retain unilateral authority over their child, and the government should have absolutely none. However, and though a parent’s unalienable authority/right over their child (minor) is absolute, along with it comes a duty to affect the same level of care over another’s child as well. Choosing not to immunize a child is your right however, being a cause in the occurrence of supporting a pandemic threat of having not done so is clearly not a liberty one possesses.

As we can easily facilitate the risk of government intervention we also know the consequence of government action. It is never thoughtful, measured, conscientious or rational and this occurs for one simple reason. Government has no consequential risk or burden for the failure of its actions and for this reason the Public has a far greater duty, thru conscientious action, to self-regulate.

Try as the media may this matter is not a political issue nor should it be. It is a public issue and for this reason here is the manner in which it should be addressed. Public admonition – you want your child to have access to the public then you need to protect the public from your actions by immunizing your child. Should you choose to not immunize your child then you must not permit your child to be exposed to either the risk of becoming contagious or by becoming a source-risk for contagion.

Last point: Measles, here in the U.S., has been controlled for decades and only recently has it seen a surge in occurrence the cause of which is clearly a consequence of increased migration into the U.S. from areas outside of the U.S. where Measles continues to be a problem. This fact proves an even great source of failure; the Governments unwillingness to affect a containment facility. The best way to eliminate the politicizing of immunization is to keep the virus from gaining access to the U.S.; what a novel idea!
